چکیده

We report on the detection of a thermal disc component from the stellar-mass black hole binary XTE J1118+480 in the canonical low/hard state. The presence of a thermal component with a temperature of approximately 0.21 keV in the Chandra spectra of XTE J1118+480 is found at more than the 14σ confidence level. Based on this evidence, we argue that the accretion disc in XTE J1118+480 is not truncated far from the central black hole in contrast with previous

A jet model for the broadband spectrum of XTE J1118+480 Synchrotron emission from radio to X-rays in the Low/Hard spectral state

Observations have revealed strong evidence for powerful jets in the Low/Hard states of black hole candidate X-ray binaries. Correlations, both temporal and spectral, between the radio – infrared and X-ray bands suggest that jet synchrotron as well as inverse Compton emission could also be significantly contributing at higher frequencies. We show here that, for reasonable assumptions about the j...

A Jet Model for the Broadband Spectrum of Xte J1118+480: Optically Thin Synchrotron X-rays in the Low/hard Spectral State

Observations have revealed strong evidence for powerful jets in the Low/Hard states of black hole candidate X-ray binaries. Correlations between the radio and IR, and radio and X-ray bands suggest that significant contributions to the observed broadband spectrum originate via synchrotron, and also possibly inverse Compton, emission from the jet. We show here that, for reasonable assumptions abo...

External Compton emission from relativistic jets in Galactic black hole candidates and ultraluminous X-ray sources

Galactic binary systems that contain a black hole candidate emit hard X-rays in their low luminosity mode. We show that this emission can be understood as due to the Compton scattering of photons from the companion star and/or the accretion disk by relativistic electrons in a jet. The same electrons are also responsible for the radio emission. Two sources — XTE J1118+480 and Cygnus X-1 — are mo...

Multiwavelength observations revealing the evolution of the outburst of the black hole XTE J1118+480

We report multiwavelength observations of the soft X-ray transient XTE J1118+480, which we observed with UKIRT, Hubble Space Telescope (HST), RXTE, Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) and many other instruments and facilities. Adding radio (Ryle Telescope, VLA), submillimetre (JCMT) and X-ray (Chandra and SAX) data from the literature, we assembled the most complete spectral energy distribution...

On the Lack of Thermal Emission from the Quiescent Black Hole XTE J1118+480: Evidence for the Event Horizon

A soft component of thermal emission is very commonly observed from the surfaces of quiescent, accreting neutron stars. We searched with Chandra for such a surface component of emission from the dynamical black-hole candidate XTE J1118+480 (= J1118), which has a primary mass M1 ≈ 8 M⊙. None was found, as one would expect if the compact X-ray source is a bona fide black hole that possesses an ev...
